The Town of Auburn issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the sale or long-term lease of two former elementary school properties which were closed in the fall of 2015 when the new Middle School opened. The Town sought qualified proposals that were consistent with the Elementary School Re-Use/Disposition Advisory Group’s recommendations which prioritized redevelopment proposals for senior housing, over 55 housing or other housing opportunities. Following a lengthy public process, and with a unanimous vote of the Elementary School Re-Use/Disposition Advisory Group and the Board of Selectmen, Pennrose Properties LLC was selected as the preferred developer/buyer. The Town will be retaining the fields/playgrounds at each site and Pennrose will be providing $25,000 to the Town for each playground/field for improvements. Each school will be redeveloped into 55 units of senior housing, with 47 units of affordable senior housing and right market rate at each site, for a total of 110 senior housing units.
Town administration is very excited about these projects as they will provide much needed affordable senior housing, retain the beautiful façade of each school, and generate tax revenues. We fully support these projects and have and will continue to work with the developers to design two senior housing facilities that meet the needs of seniors.
Attention: Pennrose Properties owns and operates both Mary D. Stone & Julia Bancroft- the Town is not involved with the housing lotteries or management. These are private developments with their own housing lottery process and applications.
